The 2018 World Cup in France was not without its ups and downs, with both sides taking their chances to get in the lead, and even with the hosts winning 3-0 to become the first team to take a third consecutive World Cup crown.
However, one aspect of the game which will have gone down as one of the most memorable was the sheer quality of the opposition.
The French side had played the most of any team in the tournament, and the home side were in a commanding position in their favour.
They had not conceded a goal in the second half, and with England having had the better of the chances in the first half, it was clear that France’s chances of winning the game were slim.
This was the second game in a row in which England had beaten Spain in a World Cup qualifier.
In both games they were unable to break down the Spanish defence, and in both games England managed to force their way past them.
The fact that Spain had to settle for a point against France, despite scoring the opening goal, will be remembered for a long time, and will probably be remembered by many as one more example of the fact that this tournament is not a great match for any side.
But for a side who had been in a long slump, it is also a great opportunity to put a bow on a great season, and take their campaign to the next level.
They did it against Spain, but it is now the task for them to do it against France.
They are already on course to beat Italy in their opening match, and although they have not been able to get much going at home, it seems that they will have a good chance of doing so again, and it could even be the turning point of the season.
England’s best chance of making the quarter-finals is to win the second leg of their home tie against Switzerland, a match that they were drawn against in the group stage.
That would make them level on points with Germany, which is only two points behind the champions, and would give them a decent chance of qualifying for the finals.
That would also mean that they would have to face France again, a team which has struggled at home this season, but they have had a few ups and down in the past few months.
They have won their opening two games, but had to lose a friendly to the Netherlands in their first game, and then were beaten by Belgium in the last game of the group.
They were also beaten by a weakened Germany in their final group game, but still managed to qualify.
But it is still an extremely difficult task, and England have a long way to go to be in a position to do that.
Their two games against Switzerland are two games which they are already behind the other two teams in the table, and a tie against Spain will be their best chance at qualifying for Russia 2018.
They could also do worse than face the best team in world football in the semi-finals, as Argentina will be hoping to get a result against the hosts of the 2018 World Cups.
Argentina have not played in a game since 2010, and they have only won three of their four games in the competition.
They will need to put their season on the back foot to get anything going at all, and have a real test in front of them against the Argentine champions.
They beat Chile 2-1 in their last game in Argentina in June, so they have a chance to get some good results, but there is no guarantee that they can do so with the way they have played so far this season.
