Merkel’s spokesman Peter Altmaier told a weekly press briefing that Trump and Merkel were “not friends” and had never met in person.
“He is not a friend of the chancellor,” Altmaiers said.
“She would never want to become friends with him.”
The chancellor has long sought to distance herself from Trump, whom she has described as “unfit to be president of the United States.”
