German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been asked if his country will send troops to the Afghanistan war.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has faced criticism in recent weeks over the deployment of German troops in Afghanistan, but she insisted on Friday that the country would send its soldiers to Afghanistan.
She said: ‘Germany will not take part in a war that is not in our interests.’
‘There will be a German military presence in Afghanistan.
It is the right of every country to have a military presence there.’
The war in Afghanistan is not about Germany.
It has nothing to do with Germany.
The war in Iraq is about Iraq, it has nothing with Germany.’
German troops in Iraq have fought alongside the Iraqi army and Kurdish forces against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) for more than five years.
